Smart Glass
What is Smart Glass?
Our premium laminated and double-pane Smart Glass units integrate UL Recognized Smart Film PDLC technology, allowing your glass to switch from transparent to frosted privacy—or anywhere in between—instantly. Designed for both residential and commercial applications, Smart Glass offers dynamic light control while maintaining a sleek, modern aesthetic.
When powered off, the liquid crystal molecules scatter light, creating frosted visual privacy.
When powered on, the molecules align, allowing clear, unobstructed views in seconds.
Transform Your Space with Smart Glass
Smart Glass employs Polymer Dispersed Liquid Crystal (PDLC) technology, where liquid crystals are dispersed in a polymer and cured between layers of transparent conductive plastic. The resulting “sandwich” acts as a dynamic light filter:
No voltage → molecules scatter light → frosted privacy
Voltage applied → molecules align → transparent state
Compatible dimming controls can provide intermediate levels of privacy and transparency. Can include fire-rated, anti X-ray, or tinted layers for specialized applications.
This versatile technology is ideal for interior and exterior uses: conference rooms, bathrooms, healthcare facilities, offices, and even as projection surfaces.

Frequently Asked Questions About Smart Glass
Smart Glass is electrically controlled glass that can change its appearance when power is applied. PDLC Smart Glass can switch from frosted privacy to transparent glass in seconds. It is commonly used for offices, conference rooms, healthcare facilities, hotels, bathrooms, residential spaces, and other areas where instant privacy is needed without traditional blinds or curtains.
PDLC Smart Glass uses Polymer Dispersed Liquid Crystal technology laminated within the glass. When electricity is applied, the liquid crystals align and the glass becomes transparent. When the power is switched off, the crystals scatter light and create a frosted privacy effect. The change happens almost instantly and can be controlled using a wall switch, remote, app, or building automation system.
Regular glass remains transparent unless a permanent tint, coating, curtain, or blind is added. Smart Glass gives you control over privacy electronically. You can keep the openness and natural light of glass when privacy isn't required, then switch the glass to a frosted state when you want to visually separate the space.
PDLC Smart Glass is a type of switchable privacy glass that contains a Polymer Dispersed Liquid Crystal layer. Unlike electrochromic glass, which is primarily designed to gradually darken for solar and glare control, PDLC technology is designed primarily for instant privacy by switching between transparent and frosted states.
Smart Film is generally applied to existing glass, making it an excellent retrofit option. Smart Glass has the switchable PDLC layer incorporated into a laminated glass assembly or insulated glass unit. Smart Film is often more economical for existing windows, while Smart Glass can be ideal for new construction, doors, architectural glazing, and factory-built window systems.
Smart Glass provides excellent visual privacy in its frosted state by obscuring objects and people behind the glass. However, PDLC Smart Glass should not automatically be described as "blackout glass." It continues to transmit significant natural light while frosted. This makes it particularly useful where privacy is required without making a room feel dark or enclosed.
Yes. Smart Glass for homes can be installed in bathrooms, ensuite partitions, bedrooms, front entrances, interior doors, home offices, sliding doors, and other residential applications. It is particularly useful in modern homes where homeowners want to maintain an open architectural design without relying on blinds or curtains for privacy.
Yes. Office Smart Glass is commonly used for conference rooms, executive offices, meeting rooms, glass partitions, and private workspaces. Switchable privacy glass allows an office to remain bright and visually open when appropriate while providing privacy for meetings, presentations, interviews, or confidential conversations when required.
Yes. Bathroom Smart Glass is an increasingly popular alternative to blinds, curtains, and permanently frosted glass. It can be used for bathroom windows, glass partitions, and other privacy applications. With the correct glass construction and electrical installation, switchable privacy glass can provide privacy while maintaining the clean appearance of a modern bathroom.
The amount of ultraviolet light blocked depends on the specific Smart Glass construction, interlayers, and glazing system being used. Many PDLC Smart Glass products provide substantial UV protection. Buyers comparing products should review the manufacturer's tested specifications rather than assuming that every type of Smart Glass provides identical UV, infrared, or solar performance.
Smart Glass can contribute to an efficient building design, but its performance depends heavily on the type of smart glass technology and the complete glazing system. PDLC Smart Glass is primarily a privacy technology rather than a solar-control technology. When incorporated into an appropriate insulated glass unit, it can be combined with other glazing components designed to improve overall thermal performance.
PDLC Smart Glass requires electricity to maintain its transparent state. When power is removed, the glass normally returns to its frosted privacy state. The electrical demand is relatively low, and the system can be connected to several control options, including wall switches, remotes, automation systems, timers, sensors, and compatible smart-home controls.
Yes. Depending on the control system, electric Smart Glass can be operated through a wall switch, handheld remote, smartphone, automation controller, or smart-building system. This makes switchable glass useful in both residential and commercial spaces where users want convenient or automated control over glass privacy.
Some PDLC Smart Glass systems can be dimmed when used with compatible controllers. Rather than simply switching between fully transparent and fully frosted, the electrical voltage can be adjusted to produce intermediate privacy levels. The available range and appearance will depend on the specific Smart Glass, transformer, and dimming control system.
Smart Glass prices vary considerably depending on glass size, thickness, shape, electrical requirements, fabrication, shipping, controls, installation, and whether the project requires laminated glass or insulated glass units. For an accurate Smart Glass price, it is usually best to obtain a project-specific quotation based on the dimensions and construction requirements of each opening.
Yes. Smart Glass can be manufactured in custom sizes and configurations for architectural projects. Depending on the manufacturer and application, options can include laminated Smart Glass, Smart Glass IGUs, custom dimensions, electrical connections, and different control configurations. Custom fabrication is especially important for window manufacturers, architects, contractors, and OEM applications.
Smart Glass is used in commercial offices, conference rooms, healthcare facilities, hospitals, dental offices, hotels, luxury homes, bathrooms, schools, retail spaces, restaurants, doors, partitions, and other architectural applications. Anywhere that glass is desirable but controllable privacy is also needed can potentially be a good application for switchable Smart Glass.
The service life of Smart Glass depends on the quality of the PDLC material, lamination, electrical components, installation, environmental conditions, and frequency of operation. High-quality systems are designed for long-term architectural use. Buyers should compare warranties, certifications, technical specifications, installation requirements, and manufacturer support when evaluating Smart Glass products.
Look beyond price alone. Important factors include the type of Smart Glass technology, clarity, haze, electrical requirements, glass construction, warranty, certifications, manufacturing quality, technical support, replacement-part availability, and installation experience. For commercial and architectural projects, it is also important to confirm that the proposed glass construction meets applicable building and electrical requirements.
Smart Film Inc. supplies PDLC Smart Glass and switchable privacy solutions for residential, commercial, architectural, and OEM applications throughout the United States and Canada. Custom Smart Glass can be manufactured for specific project dimensions and paired with compatible controls. Customers can also receive assistance selecting the appropriate Smart Glass configuration for their window, door, partition, or architectural application.
Yes. Smart Glass can be installed in exterior windows when it is incorporated into a properly designed glazing system suitable for the building and environmental conditions. For exterior applications, PDLC Smart Glass is commonly manufactured as laminated glass or incorporated into an insulated glass unit (IGU) to provide switchable privacy while maintaining the performance required from an exterior window assembly.
Smart Film Inc. can configure Smart Glass with options such as double-pane or triple-pane IGUs, Low-E coatings, tempered glass, laminated glass and other architectural glazing components depending on the project requirements. The PDLC layer provides instant clear-to-frosted privacy, while the overall glass assembly can be engineered for thermal, structural and solar-control requirements.
Exterior Smart Glass is particularly useful for residential windows, entrance doors, luxury homes, offices, healthcare facilities, hotels and commercial buildings where privacy is required without conventional blinds or curtains.
Yes. Smart Glass can be manufactured as an insulated glass unit (IGU) for residential, commercial and architectural window applications. A Smart Glass IGU combines switchable PDLC privacy glass with a sealed double-pane or triple-pane glazing system, allowing the unit to function as both an exterior window assembly and an electronically controlled privacy solution.
Smart Glass IGUs can be customized with different glass thicknesses, spacer configurations, Low-E coatings, tempered or laminated glass, low-iron glass and other performance glazing options depending on project requirements. The PDLC layer switches from transparent to frosted privacy when electrical power is controlled.
Because the switchable technology is integrated into the glass assembly, Smart Glass IGUs are particularly well suited to new construction, replacement windows, curtain walls, doors and custom architectural glazing. Units can also be manufactured to accommodate many conventional aluminum, vinyl, fiberglass and wood window systems.
Yes. Smart Glass is particularly well suited for new construction because the switchable PDLC technology, electrical connections and glazing system can be incorporated into the project during the design and construction stages. This allows architects, builders, window manufacturers and electrical contractors to coordinate the Smart Glass installation with the window frames, doors, partitions, wiring and building automation systems.
For exterior applications, Smart Glass insulated glass units (IGUs) can be manufactured for many residential and commercial window systems. For interior applications, laminated Smart Glass can be used for conference rooms, office partitions, bathrooms, healthcare spaces, entrance systems and other architectural glass applications.
Planning Smart Glass during construction also allows wiring and controls to be concealed for a clean finished appearance. Depending on the project, Smart Glass can be operated through wall switches, remote controls, smartphone applications, smart-home systems, sensors or building automation systems.
